Biden to Americans in Ukraine: You’re on your own

.

For the second time in less than a year, President Joe Biden has allowed a democratic ally to fall to tyranny, and, in an eerie echo of our abysmal abandonment of Americans and our allies in Afghanistan, Biden’s State Department has warned those stuck in Ukraine that though they need to evacuate, they’re on their own as to figuring out just how they can do so.

“Given that the president has said military action by Russia could come at any time,” the State Department warned on a call, according to Fox News national security reporter Jennifer Griffin. “The U.S. government will not be in a position to evacuate U.S. citizens. So U.S. citizens, currently present in Ukraine should plan accordingly.”

From our perennially pissed off media to our tut-tutting allies, the West spent half a decade apoplectic over the prospect that Donald Trump was Vladimir Putin’s puppet. Gallons of ink and years of cable news was dedicated to breathless speculation about nonexistent sex tapes featuring golden showers. The House of Representatives succeeded in its third-ever impeachment of a president over a single phone call between Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky on the grounds that the Republican had conditioned congressionally authorized aid to the country on whether the Ukrainian president would announce an investigation into the corrupt dealings of Biden’s son, Hunter. Even though Trump, in deed and dollar if not by tweet, proved an ally to Ukraine and loyal opposition to Putin and his thugs, Biden boasted that it was he, actually, whom Putin feared would win the 2020 election.

Alas, no.

From allowing the Kremlin to bypass Ukraine and directly expand its energy market into Europe with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Biden’s concession that the U.S. would not respond to a “minor incursion” into Ukraine by Russia, Biden has proven more loyal to Putin than pundits here only dreamed Trump would be. And now, as the White House lets Putin run roughshod on a crucial democratic ally, Biden is once again risking American lives in the process.

After years of handwringing over Russiagate, Biden’s deference to Putin is humiliating and dangerous enough. But abandoning Americans yet again to fend for themselves in a catastrophe of the White House’s own making? That’s downright disgraceful.
