It is a scenario that has occurred repeatedly during the pandemic: Democrats who publicly demand ordinary people wear masks yet are exposed for not following their own rules.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser are all politicians who implemented mask mandates. They have all expressed the importance of wearing masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19. They expect everyone to follow these rules, everyone except themselves. They are among the myriad of Democrats caught violating their own alleged beliefs. After this weekend, we can add Democratic political operative and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to the list. It begs the question, do any Democrats follow any of the mask mandates they impose on the ordinary citizens?
Abrams helped kick off Glennwood Elementary School’s third annual African American Read-in last week, the Washington Examiner reported. According to the City Schools of Decatur’s policy, anyone on school grounds is required to wear a face mask at all times.
Yet, Abrams was exposed when the school’s principal, Holly Brookins, shared a picture of Abrams not wearing a mask and posing for a photo with children and school staff — all of whom were wearing a mask. Abrams retweeted the picture but then deleted it after she received backlash.
Abrams’s campaign stated she wore a mask to the school but removed it when she spoke to the students. Video footage confirmed this, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Abrams apparently kept the mask off while taking the photos with the children. The problem is the coronavirus does not delay in infecting people because of photo ops. If masks are the crucial preventive measure that helps stop the spread, then Abrams unquestionably endangered school children. It may not have been intentional, but she still put school children at risk.
“As a mom and former teacher, seeing the willingness of the Left to target our children and sacrifice their mental, physical, and emotional health to further their tyrannical agenda solicits outrage,” said Mallory Staples, a Republican congressional candidate in Georgia. “This is child abuse.”
Abrams’s incident is seemingly a repeated occurrence with Democrats. Last week, while at the NFC Championship Game in Los Angeles, three California Democrats, Newsom, Breed, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, were also seen enjoying themselves without wearing masks. Rather than admit fault, Garcetti had the audacity to claim he “held his breath” when pictured without a mask.
The fact that Abrams was unable to admit fault and apologize is indicative of the hubris that all-too-many Democrat politicians have frequently exhibited during this whole ordeal. In addition to endangering children, it adds fuel to the polarization in the country. Maybe someday, Democrats will start wearing the masks they force everyone else to wear in the name of safety.
