Democrats proudly proclaim they oppose all abortion restrictions

With the possibility that the Supreme Court may finally return the issue of abortion to state legislatures, the Democratic Party is happy to remind everyone of its uncompromising embrace of abortion on demand, with no restrictions.

Democrats across the country have reiterated their position that they think abortion should be legal no matter how late in the pregnancy or how developed the baby is. Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nan Whaley and Senate candidate Tim Ryan both professed their opposition to any restrictions on abortion at any point in the pregnancy. Ryan used to pretend to be anti-abortion. Now, he wants taxpayer-funded abortions and to strip doctors and nurses of conscience protections if they don’t want to perform them.

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Sen. Raphael Warnock also refused to name a restriction on abortion they would support. That was also the case for Beto O’Rourke, who ran for Senate in Texas in 2018 and is now running for governor. John Fetterman, who will likely be the Democratic Senate nominee in Pennsylvania, said he would “proudly” vote to end the filibuster and support the Senate bill that would create a “right” to abortion through the entire pregnancy in all 50 states and strike down nearly all state abortion restrictions.

That Senate bill, which Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wants to bring to a vote next week, is so extreme that even Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), an abortion-rights supporter, said it’s too broad. But Democrats already voted on the bill in February, and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) were the only two who voted against it. The rest of the party has fallen in line to the point that several Democratic members of Congress endorsed a primary challenge against one of their colleagues over his pro-life stance.

The Democratic mantra of “safe, legal, and rare” is long gone. Democrats are now the party of abortion on demand, on the taxpayer dime, with no restrictions at any point during the pregnancy. In fact, they say doctors and nurses who don’t want to participate should be forced to, and pro-life crisis pregnancy centers should be forced to advertise government-funded abortions.

Part of the reason that abortion won’t propel Democrats to victories in 2022 is that the party has positioned itself too far outside the mainstream. Most of the country wants restrictions on abortion after the first trimester of pregnancy, while Democratic politicians and pro-abortion activists want no restrictions even in the third trimester. Just as the Supreme Court is poised to let voters decide this issue for themselves, Democrats want to force their extreme position on the rest of the country from the federal level.
