Democratic politicians and consultants still think that the best way to win back Hispanics is to claim constantly that they are too dumb to know when someone is lying to them.

That is the strategy being relayed in a recent Axios piece. According to Russell Contreras, “some Latino Democrats say their party needs a Spanish-language campaign to counter GOP messaging and misinformation around guns, mass shootings and other threats to democracy.”

Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) said Democrats need Spanish-language outreach to show how Republicans don’t care about Hispanic victims of violence, and strategist Kristian Ramos said Democrats need to tell a “clear story” of “what we’ve done for Latinos contrasted with the extremism of the Republican Party.”

According to them, Hispanics simply aren’t smart enough to realize that the GOP doesn’t care about them. Democrats have been using this talking point as Hispanics have trended away from Democrats in major parts of the country, with several congressional Democrats and legacy media outlets lamenting that Hispanics were too dumb to see through Republican “misinformation” and “conspiracy theories.”

In reality, Hispanics aren’t voting for Republicans because of Spanish “misinformation.” They are voting for Republicans because Republicans are appealing to them on the issues they care about, whereas Democrats shrug off their concerns about the economy and focus on rhetoric and policies that pander to white liberals. Hispanic voters, like all voters, are capable of thinking for themselves, and a growing number of them are deciding that the Democratic Party doesn’t represent their interests.

Democratic politicians and consultants will struggle to grasp this concept because they think the only reasons voters don’t support them are that they are evil racists or that they are “voting against their best interests.” For Hispanics, these Democrats think it must be the latter, so they blame Spanish-language GOP ads for brainwashing voters. This way of thinking explains why Democrats dramatically underperformed expectations in 2020 and why they are on their way to a wipeout this November.
